I’ll be honest. For years I wanted a Hobie pedal kayak but I couldn’t justify the price tag. The Hobie Mirage Passport 12.0 R is the boat that finally opened the door for anglers like me. It runs the real MirageDrive GT pedal system with kick up fins, and it costs a whole lot less than the boats Hobie is famous for.

The Passport 12.0 R is a 12 foot rotomolded sit on top with a 34 inch beam. Hobie lists the fitted hull weight at 73 pounds and the max capacity at 400 pounds. It is not a stripped down toy. It is a legit fishing platform with a transducer cavity, accessory tracks, and rod holders baked in.
Who the Passport 12.0 R Is For
This kayak is for the angler who has been paddling a budget sit on top and is tired of putting the rod down every time the wind moves the boat. If you fish lakes, ponds, slow rivers, or calm inshore water and you want hands free fishing, this is one of the most affordable ways to get real pedal power. It also fits weekend warriors who fish two or three times a month and want a Hobie without financing one.
Stability and Handling
At 34 inches wide with a rotomolded hull, the Passport feels planted. I can shift around, reach behind me for tackle, and stand up on the EVA padded deck when the water is calm. The stowable rudder keeps it tracking straight when you stop pedaling, and the boat still glides fine when you pull the drive up and paddle. It comes with a two piece aluminum paddle, which covers you in skinny water.
Seat and Comfort
The seat is a breathable aluminum frame mesh seat. On a hot day that mesh is a gift because it lets air move under you instead of trapping sweat. It is comfortable for a few hours, but it is not the plush Vantage ST seat from the bigger Hobies. On a full eight hour day your back will know the difference. Plan to take standing breaks on the EVA pads.
Storage and Rigging
The Passport 12.0 R is easy to rig for the way you fish. You get an 8 inch twist and seal hatch for below deck storage, bow and stern cargo wells with bungee, two flush mounted rod holders, and two accessory tracks for a fish finder or rod holders. There is a transducer cavity with a scupper, a Power Pole Micro bracket indent for a shallow water anchor, and tackle storage under the seat and along the gunnels. A vertical accessory tube accepts a sail kit or a bimini shade.
For electronics, we recommend the new Accuphy Ping Live Mini live sonar system. It retails for $699. See it here.

Pedal Drive Performance
The MirageDrive GT is the heart of this boat. You pedal with your legs and your hands stay on the rod. The kick up fins are the real deal: when you hit a stump, rock, or shallow bar, the fins fold back instead of snapping off, then pop back down when you are clear. That matters because most budget pedal kayaks do not offer anything close to it. Cruise speed is plenty for working a shoreline, and reverse is a pull on the drive handle away.
Hobie’s fin drive also has a meaningful edge over the propeller-style pedal drives most other brands use, and it shows up in shallow water. A propeller typically sticks down a foot or slightly more below the hull and needs a foot of depth or more to spin freely — run skinny and you are either dragging it through the bottom or pulling the whole drive up. Hobie’s fins do not have that problem. They can lay almost flat against the underside of the hull and still flutter enough to keep you moving. You can pedal through water so shallow a propeller drive would be stuck in it.
Honest Drawbacks
Hobie was bought out by Bass Pro Shops in 2026. There has been a period here in 2026 where parts have been scarce for pedal drives during the transition period. This has prevented many from purchasing. However, some dealers are starting to get parts in stock. Before purchasing in 2026 verify that you can find parts like replacement mirage drive fins. In 2027 we imagine parts will be much more accessible. We have spoken with the company on this topic. We are very confident in the brand.
The 400 pound capacity is the number to respect. If you are a bigger guy plus gear, battery, and a cooler, do the math before you buy. For the battery, I recommend the WattCycle 12V 100Ah mini LiFePO4 battery with Bluetooth — it runs most 12V trolling motors up to 55lb thrust plus a fish finder, and it’s compact and light. At 73 pounds for the fitted hull, it is not the lightest boat to car top solo, so a cart or trailer helps. The mesh seat is good but basic, and while the price beats the Pro Angler by a mile, it is still real money compared to a paddle only kayak. If you mostly fish tiny ponds, a simple paddle kayak might be the smarter buy.
To haul your kayak, we recommend Malone kayak trailers. See them here.
