The Passport 10.5 R is Hobie’s most affordable way into a true pedal drive kayak. The “R” means rotomolded: a tougher, more traditional plastic hull than the older thermoformed version. You get the legendary MirageDrive GT with Kick-Up Fins, a 65 lb hull you can actually car-top, and a 325 lb capacity.

Who This Kayak Is For

This boat is for the angler who wants Hobie pedal power without the Hobie flagship price. It fits beginners stepping up from a paddle kayak, weekend anglers who fish lakes, ponds, and calm bays, and anyone who needs a light boat for solo car-topping. If you want a full electronics suite and a stand-up casting deck, you will outgrow it. If you want to pedal hands-free and catch fish this weekend, it is ready.

Stability

The 34-inch-wide hull is stable for its class. Most anglers can stand in calm water, especially with the EVA pads that add traction, but this is not a dedicated stand-and-fish barge. It shines as a seated fishing platform. The hull tracks fine with the twist-and-stow rudder down, and the shorter 10.5-foot length makes it easy to turn around docks and laydowns.

Comfort and Seat

The suspended mesh aluminum-frame seat is a highlight at this price. It breathes, which matters in summer, and the aluminum frame holds its shape all day. The seat is basic compared to a Vantage CT, with less padding and fewer adjustments, but it is far more comfortable than a molded plastic seat. For four to six hour trips, most people are happy.

Storage and Rigging

You get an 8-inch Twist-n-Seal hatch in the center, bow and stern cargo wells with cross bungees, and two accessory mounting tracks. Two rod holders are molded in. That covers a crate, a couple of rods, and a dry bag up front. There are no H-Rails like the bigger Hobies, so plan on using the tracks for your fish finder and rod holders. The vertical accessory tube accepts a sail kit or bimini if you want to play around.

Pedal Drive Performance

The MirageDrive GT with Glide Technology is the real deal: roller bearings make each pedal stroke smooth and efficient. Kick-Up Fins collapse on impact with rocks, stumps, or shallow bars, then redeploy on their own, which saves the drive in skinny water. The GT is forward-only, so you reverse by paddling or turning the boat; the included two-piece paddle handles that. Steering comes from the twist-and-stow rudder with a simple hand control.

Hobie’s fin drive also has a meaningful edge over the propeller-style pedal drives most other brands use, and it shows up in shallow water. A propeller typically sticks down a foot or slightly more below the hull and needs a foot of depth or more to spin freely — run skinny and you are either dragging it through the bottom or pulling the whole drive up. Hobie’s fins do not have that problem. They can lay almost flat against the underside of the hull and still flutter enough to keep you moving. You can pedal through water so shallow a propeller drive would be stuck in it.

Honest Drawbacks

Hobie was bought out by Bass Pro Shops in 2026. There has been a period here in 2026 where parts have been scarce for pedal drives during the transition period. This has prevented many from purchasing. However, some dealers are starting to get parts in stock. Before purchasing in 2026 verify that you can find parts like replacement mirage drive fins. In 2027 we imagine parts will be much more accessible. We have spoken with the company on this topic. We are very confident in the brand.

No reverse is the big one. Once you have fished a boat with instant reverse, going back to paddle-only backing up feels old school. The cockpit is simple, and bigger anglers may find the seat capacity of 275 lbs and total capacity of 325 lbs limiting once you add gear. The rotomolded hull is tougher than the old thermoform, but the Passport line is still Hobie’s budget build, so fit and finish is not Pro Angler level.

Hobie Mirage Passport 10.5 R Fishing Kayak FAQ

Is the Passport 10.5 R good for fishing?

Yes for light to moderate fishing. It has rod holders, tracks, and hatches, plus hands-free pedaling. Heavy offshore or tournament loads suit bigger boats.

What is the difference between the Passport R and the older Passport?

The R has a rotomolded polyethylene hull instead of thermoformed plastic, making it tougher and more like traditional kayak construction.

Can you stand in the Passport 10.5 R?

In calm water, yes, with care. It is a stable 34-inch hull, but it is designed more as a seated pedal platform than a stand-up casting boat.

How much does it weigh?

The fitted hull is 65 lbs and fully rigged weight is 75 lbs, light enough for one person to car-top.
