Motors & Propulsion · Bixpy

I’ve been running Bixpy motors on my kayaks, paddleboards and even for snorkeling for years. This is everything I’d tell a friend before they buy one: which kit, which battery, how to mount it, and where the money is better spent.

Why I Keep Using Bixpy

Bixpy makes one of the best kayak motor kits in the industry. They’re sleek, quiet, easy to mount on a wide range of kayaks, and dead reliable. I’ve used the standard PP-378 battery for years and consistently get about 6 hours of typical mixed-speed use out of it.

The other thing I like: a Bixpy isn’t only a kayak motor. The same system runs on an inflatable paddleboard fin box, on a transom bracket for small boats, and Bixpy’s SwimJet handhelds for snorkeling and scuba run on the same battery idea.

Which Bixpy Kit to Buy

Kit Price (Bixpy direct) Who it’s for
Bixpy K-1 Outboard Kit $1,399 The standard kayak and SUP kit. Start here for most paddle and pedal kayaks.
Bixpy K-1 Angler Pro Outboard Kit $1,699 Fishing-focused version of the K-1 kit
Angler Pro Kit with SUN80 Solar Panel $1,899 Long days or multi-day trips where you want to top up the battery
Bixpy N-3 Outboard Motor and Power Pack Kit $2,499 Bigger, heavier boats that need more push than a kayak kit
K-Power Control Module $179 Run the motor off your own 24V lithium battery (see the battery section)

Prices were checked on Bixpy’s site on October 16, 2026. Bixpy runs sales often, so check the current price before you buy, and confirm what’s included in the kit you pick.

The Battery Move I Recommend

Here’s the smart-money move for big fishing kayaks: skip Bixpy’s $999 PP-768 battery (768Wh). Get the K-Power Module and pair it with a WattCycle 24V 50Ah lithium battery (about $249). That gives you around 1,280Wh for far less money, and it frees you from proprietary parts.

If you paddle lighter boats or SUPs and want the simplest setup, the standard PP-378 is still the easy button. That’s the one that gives me roughly 6 hours of mixed use.

Mounting It on Your Kayak

The number one question I get about Bixpy is “How do I mount this on MY kayak?” Bixpy now sells adapters for most popular kayaks, so you usually don’t need to drill:

Your kayak Mount Price
Anything with a rod holder Bixpy Rod Holder Adapter (no drilling) $229
Hobie Mirage drive, Vibe X-Drive, Pelican HD, Lightning Hobie/Mirage drive-well adapter (K-1 & J-2) $159
Old Town Sportsman / Topwater PDL Old Town PDL Pedal Drive Adapter $229
NuCanoe NuCanoe QuickConnect Adapter $489
Kayaks with a rudder mount or none at all Universal Versa Rudder with steering $199

If you want a no-drill setup you can move between kayaks, the Rod Holder Adapter is the one I’d start with. I broke it down in my Bixpy Rod Holder Adapter review.

Bixpy vs a GPS Trolling Motor

These don’t really compete. A Bixpy is a light, sleek motor for getting somewhere: cruising, exploring, getting to your fishing spot without paddling. It doesn’t hold you on a spot.

If you fish structure and want the kayak to sit still in the wind, you want GPS anchoring. For that I recommend the AutoBoat Smart Head on a 12V trolling motor. It’s all in my GPS trolling motor guide.

And if you want maximum power over light weight, the Newport NK300 is my pick. See my best kayak motors list.

Maintenance

  • Rinse the motor and connectors with fresh water after every saltwater trip.
  • Check the prop and intake for weeds, line and sand before each launch.
  • Store batteries partly charged in a cool, dry place over the off-season.
  • Bixpy sells replacement parts and repair services directly, so a hard hit usually isn’t the end of the motor.

My Verdict

If you want a light, reliable motor you can carry in one trip and move between boats, Bixpy is the one I keep coming back to. Get the K-1 kit, use the Rod Holder Adapter if you don’t want to drill, and on a big fishing kayak go K-Power plus a 24V lithium battery instead of the expensive PP-768.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Bixpy battery last?

I consistently get about 6 hours of typical mixed-speed use from the standard PP-378. Run time drops with full throttle, heavy loads, wind and current.

Can I use my own battery with a Bixpy motor?

Yes, with the K-Power Control Module ($179). I recommend pairing it with a WattCycle 24V 50Ah lithium battery for about 1,280Wh, which costs much less than Bixpy’s PP-768.

Do I need to drill my kayak to mount a Bixpy?

Usually not. The Rod Holder Adapter ($229) drops into a standard rod holder, and there are bolt-in adapters for Hobie Mirage drive wells, Old Town PDL wells and NuCanoe.

Does Bixpy have Spot-Lock or GPS anchoring?

No. Bixpy is built to move you, not hold you. If you want GPS anchoring on a kayak, look at the AutoBoat Smart Head on a 12V trolling motor.

Is Bixpy good in saltwater?

Yes, it’s built for fresh and salt water. Rinse it with fresh water after every saltwater trip and keep an eye on the connectors.
