Find Kayak Launch Locations Near You

Looking for a place to put your kayak in the water? The KayakDIY Launch Locator searches thousands of kayak launch locations across the USA — from quiet hand-launch put-ins to full trailer boat ramps. Type any city, address, or ZIP code in the search box above, pick a search radius, and you’ll get a map plus a list of nearby launches, each with one-tap directions.

How to Use the Kayak Launch Locator

  1. Enter a location. Any U.S. city, street address, or ZIP code works — or tap “Use my location” to search around you.
  2. Pick a radius. Search within 5, 10, 25, or 50 miles, depending on how far you want to drive.
  3. Browse the map and list. Every launch appears as a pin on the map and as a card in the list, sorted nearest first with the distance shown.
  4. Filter by launch type. Show everything, just designated kayak put-ins, or just boat ramps.
  5. Get directions. Each card links straight to driving directions so you can head out.

Kayak Put-Ins vs. Boat Ramps: What’s the Difference?

Not every launch is built the same. Designated kayak and canoe put-ins are made for paddlers — sandy banks, small floating docks, and hand-carry launch areas where you can slide in without hassle. Trailer boat ramps are built for powerboats: concrete slabs, often steeper and busier, sometimes with a launch fee. They can still be a great option if you trailer a bigger fishing kayak. The locator labels every result clearly, so you always know what kind of launch you’re looking at before you drive there.

Where Our Launch Data Comes From

We pull from several public sources to cover the whole country. Nationwide coverage comes from OpenStreetMap’s paddling and boating data. In Florida, we add the state’s official Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) boat ramp inventory, which includes hundreds of designated hand-launch-only kayak sites. Federal sites — national wildlife refuges, Army Corps of Engineers recreation areas, and similar public lands — come through Recreation.gov. We also add hand-picked local launches we know are good. How current is it? OpenStreetMap is searched live every time you look something up, so those results are as fresh as the source data. Florida’s FWC ramp inventory is searched live as well, but only for Florida searches. Federal sites come through Recreation.gov and can be up to seven days old, since we cache them briefly on our server. Hand-picked launches are updated by hand whenever we learn something new. We don’t independently audit for closures, so if a trip matters, double-check the launch is open before you go — conditions change, especially after storms.

Kayak Launch Locations: Frequently Asked Questions

Is the KayakDIY Launch Locator free to use?

Yes. Searching kayak launch locations is completely free, with no account or sign-up needed.

Does it work outside of Florida?

Yes — it searches anywhere in the United States. Florida searches simply get bonus coverage from the state’s official FWC ramp data on top of the nationwide sources.

What’s the difference between a kayak put-in and a boat ramp?

A kayak put-in is designed for hand-launching paddled craft: carry your boat a short distance and slide in. A boat ramp is a concrete slab built for trailering powerboats — usable with a kayak, but potentially steep, busy, or fee-based. The locator’s filters let you show one, the other, or both.

Are the launches verified?

Listings come from public map data, state agencies, and federal recreation databases, plus a few spots we’ve added by hand. Conditions change — ramps close for repairs, water levels shift — so always check local rules and recent reports before you go.

Can I use the locator on my phone?

Yes. It works in any modern mobile browser. Tap “Use my location” on your phone to find the closest kayak launch locations to where you’re standing.
