What’s in this video

This is a quick tackle tip. I build my own rod for sabiki rigs, which catch small bait fish you can use for much bigger fish. I’ve also seen folks in the Midwest catch several good eating perch on one cast with these rigs.

The build is simple: 1″ PVC pipe cut to the length you like, a cheap reel (mine was gently used from Goodwill) and stainless steel pipe clamps to hold it on. I add 1″ pipe foam insulation so it floats, which is optional but nice to have on a kayak.

Quick takeaways

  • Materials: 1" PVC pipe (a 10 ft section cut to size), a cheap reel, stainless steel pipe clamps and sabiki rigs.
  • Slide 1" pipe foam insulation over the PVC so the rod floats if it goes overboard.
  • A used reel from a thrift store works fine for this.
