What’s in this video

This Malone MicroSport LowBed off-road trailer shipped right to my door, which is a big deal if you don’t live near a dealer. I got it through ecofishingshop.com. The cool part about Malone is you can build it out like Legos. I’m running bunks for now, and later I can switch to saddles or add a second tier to haul more kayaks.

You assemble it upside down. The tongue and tongue support bolt through the frame, and the wiring runs through the tongue. The one thing that wasn’t clear to me was which frame bolts get washers and which don’t, so I watched a couple of instructional videos. I torqued the wheels to 80 ft-lbs, added the wiring for brake and side lights, the fenders, coupler and the low crossmembers.

Here’s what I found. It’s galvanized with a coating on top, so double corrosion protection for my saltwater kayaks. The wide off-road wheels keep it from sinking into sand or the soggy grass where I store it. The LED lights are rated for submersion, so I can back it right into the water. It’s light enough that I can pick it up by the handle and wheel it around the lawn.

Quick takeaways

  • Malone trailers are modular, so you can start with bunks and add saddles or a second tier later.
  • Pay attention to which frame bolts get washers during assembly; that was the one part that confused me.
  • The off-road model's wide wheels help in sand and wet grass, and the lights are rated for submersion.
  • Galvanizing plus a coating makes this a good fit for saltwater launches.
