Kayak Hull Repair: HDPE Plastic Welding With Basic Tools
I show how to repair a kayak hull with HDPE plastic welding rod and inexpensive tools, plus where to find free patch material.
What’s in this video
This is a kayak hull repair using common, inexpensive tools. The welding rods are yellow HDPE, the same material as the kayak.
You don’t have to buy rod. Lots of household containers are #2 HDPE, like laundry detergent jugs and 55 gallon drums, and you can cut them apart and use them for patching the same way. Check the bottom of the container for the plastic type. If you want a perfect color match, our store has hull repair kits, including a Hobie kit with recent OEM colors, plus wire mesh for reinforcing worn keels and split hull bottoms.
Quick takeaways
- Use welding rod that matches your hull: here it's yellow HDPE, the same as the kayak.
- #2 HDPE containers like detergent jugs and 55 gallon drums can be cut up for free patch material.
- Wire mesh can reinforce worn keels and hull bottoms that have splits.
