Jackson Kayak Fishing Kayaks: Every Model Compared

Bite, Coosa, Mayfly, YuPIK, Big Rig and Knarr. How the Jackson fishing lineup fits together, including what changed with the new Flex Drive.

What I have seen from Jackson

I have followed Jackson’s fishing kayaks for years, and the Flex Drive is the part I watch closest. The first-generation Flex Drive was a little rough around the edges and honestly did not impress me. When I got on the redesigned Flex Drive in the Knarr FD at ICAST 2022, it was noticeably easy to pedal right away, pushed through weeds well, and a lever flips the prop up so you can clear it on the water. I think they finally got it right.

On a second Knarr rigged with a MotorGuide Xi3 bow motor, I hit anchor lock and it held me in place in current while I cast. Back at ICAST 2018 I also looked over the Big Rig FDHD, a boat long loved for how much it carries and how stable it is.

Some background: Eric “EJ” Jackson and business partner Tony Lunt founded Jackson Kayak in Rock Island, Tennessee, in October 2003. The company started in whitewater and grew into one of the best known fishing kayak brands.

How to read this page: my on-water time with Jackson is in the videos below. The table specs come from Jackson’s published numbers in my reviews, and weights are as listed there (hull, with seat, or with seat and drive).

Knarr FD vs Bite FD, from my test: the Knarr takes a little more effort to pedal than the Bite FD, but it is stable enough to stand and lean to one side, and it is built for saltwater and big water. If you want a bow motor, the Knarr has a flat bow area made for one like the MotorGuide Xi3.
