What’s in this video

Hatches are an affordable, easy way to get inside your kayak for storage or rigging like fish finders, and you only need common tools. In this quick tutorial I put a clear hatch on my kayak.

I used #8 stainless steel panhead screws for my install. I recommend marine goop or waterproof marine silicone, especially if your hatch doesn’t come with a gasket. Doing it the way I show, I haven’t had any leaks. One more tip: keep the plastic you cut out so you have matching material for a plastic weld repair later.

Quick takeaways

  • I used #8 stainless steel panhead screws to mount the hatch.
  • Seal it with marine goop or waterproof marine silicone, especially if there's no gasket.
  • Save the plastic cutout so you have matching material for future plastic welding repairs.
