I install flush mount rod holders on an Old Town Vapor 10 sit in kayak, and the same steps work on most sit on top kayaks.

What’s in this video

This is how I turned a regular kayak into an angler kayak by adding flush mount rod holders. I did it on my Old Town Vapor 10 sit in, but it works on sit on top kayaks too as long as there is room inside the hull for the holder.

I drill a pilot hole with a 3/16″ bit, cut the hole with a Dremel style rotary tool (a jig saw or hole saw also works), check the fit, seal it with Marine Goop, and fasten it with tri-grip rivets and a rivet gun. Some rod holders use screws instead, and then you do not need a rivet gun at all.

Key moments

Quick takeaways

  • Check there is room inside the hull for the holder before you cut.
  • Start with a 3/16" pilot hole, then cut with a rotary tool, jig saw or hole saw.
  • Seal the holder with marine sealant like Marine Goop.
  • Rod holders that use screws skip the need for a rivet gun.
