Waterproof GoPro Charging Mod for 24 Hour Battery on the Kayak

I walk through modding a GoPro Hero 3, 3+ or 4 housing so it can run 24 hours or more on outside power and still stay waterproof.

What’s in this video

This is my full build for getting 24 hours or more of run time out of a GoPro Hero 3, 3+ or 4 while it stays protected in the waterproof housing. I drill the housing with a 31/64″ bit, fit a PG7 cable gland, and run power from a large USB battery pack to a battery eliminator. My tools were a wire stripper (I paid $9 at the time), a soldering iron kit ($16 at the time) and a Milwaukee M12 drill.

If you have an older GoPro you would need to find or make a battery eliminator, maybe from a gutted old battery with red and black leads. I also show an optional pole setup with a telescoping pole and a painters pole tripod adapter. Test the mod without the camera inside before you trust it at depth.

Quick takeaways

  • Drill the housing with a 31/64" bit for the PG7 cable gland.
  • Test the modified housing without the GoPro inside to check it holds at your depth.
  • Older GoPros need a battery eliminator, which you may have to make from an old battery.
  • A telescoping pole with a painters pole tripod adapter makes a simple camera pole.
