YakAttack Yak Motor First Look: The GPS Kayak Motor and Its Origin
At ICAST 2025 I see the new YakAttack Yak Motor with GPS and remote steering and talk about the drama around where it really comes from.
What’s in this video
At ICAST 2025 YakAttack had their new Yak Motor on a Hobie Pro Angler 14, and it was zipping along. It’s a 34 lb thrust trolling motor, which is plenty for most kayaks. It has GPS built in and remote steering. The left and right buttons turn the head, and you can spin it a full 180 to go in reverse or set it sideways to scoot across. They said this was their first polished prototype.
It was hooked to the new YakAttack 100 amp hour power pack under the seat. You don’t need their battery though. It isn’t proprietary, so you can use your own. At the time the motor was going to be around $1,600 and the battery around $750 as an optional add-on.
Here’s where the drama comes in. YakAttack made it seem like something new they created. But a lot of kayakers recognized it right away as a Haibo Platypus Q007. The White Kayaker on TikTok had used that motor and shared it, so many of us knew YakAttack white labeled it. That’s common in the industry and other companies do it. From what I can tell it’s basically a Haibo motor with YakAttack stickers, a different color housing and maybe a higher price. What you do get is YakAttack backing the product.
Quick takeaways
- It's a 34 lb thrust motor with GPS and remote steering, and the head turns 180 degrees for reverse.
- You can run your own battery. The YakAttack power pack is optional.
- It appears to be a white labeled Haibo Platypus Q007, so compare both before you buy.
