What’s in this video

At ICAST I met John Thomas (JT), owner of Yak Gadget. He was an avid kayak angler and a graphic designer for 30 years, and he started by making motor mounts. That grew into anchor systems, storage, track mounted gear and under seat storage, around 120 products, for kayaks at every price level.

He showed it all on a NuCanoe Unlimited. At the stern there’s a combo plate with a Power-Pole style hole pattern, so you can mount a motor, a Newport, or a transom mount for a regular trolling motor. It also holds their Quick Stop stake out anchor with smart cleats and line guides. A loop on the back lets you run a conventional anchor too, so you get shallow and deep water anchoring in one.

The LP Crate XD has twisting rod tubes and a dry bag cover with a YKK waterproof zipper, and everything leans at an angle for an easy reach back. JT designed that after back surgery, and to be safe on narrow kayaks where you could turtle. Under the seat, the Quad Flex and Duo Flex slide your gear out when you pull a strap. Then there’s the Flex rod holder, their two rod paddle holder with adjustable spacing and direction.

Key moments

Quick takeaways

  • The combo stern plate takes a Power-Pole style mount, a transom motor mount or the Quick Stop anchor.
  • The anchor setup handles shallow water with a stake out pole and deep water with a conventional anchor.
  • The Duo Flex fits lower seats like the Hobie Outback, and the Quad Flex fits NuCanoe, Pro Angler and Lynx seats.
  • The Flex rod holder lets you set rod spacing, flip rod direction and adjust the holders in or out.
