Homemade PVC Bait Tube for Towing Live Bait Behind a Kayak
I build a homemade PVC bait tube that tows smoothly behind my kayak and keeps my greenbacks alive until I need them.
What’s in this video
I built this bait tube because I wasn’t happy with the options for kayaks. Not all my kayaks work well with my homemade onboard bait tanks, and livewells add a lot of weight, about 8 pounds per gallon. The in-water bait containers on the market created a ton of drag while paddling.
I needed something more hydrodynamic that tows smoothly, and this is what I came up with after multiple revisions. It’s built from a 4 inch by 24 inch PVC pipe, a 4 inch floor drain cap, a 4 inch threaded cap end and a rope float. It keeps my greenbacks happy until I need them.
Quick takeaways
- Supplies: 4 in x 24 in PVC pipe, 4 in floor drain cap, 4 in threaded cap end and a rope float.
- Onboard livewells add about 8 lb per gallon of water, so towing bait saves weight.
- A smooth, hydrodynamic tube cuts the drag that store-bought bait containers create while paddling.
