The ReelYak 10ft Recon solves the oldest problem in kayak fishing: getting the boat to the water. It splits into two pieces that fit in the trunk or back seat of most SUVs, no roof rack needed. Each half weighs roughly 33 to 39 pounds, so one person can load it alone. Then it clicks together into a full-size, 430-pound-capacity pedal fishing kayak.

Who the Recon Is For

Anglers without a truck or trailer, apartment dwellers, and anyone tired of wrestling a 100-plus-pound hull onto a roof. It also suits travelers who want to bring their own boat on road trips. If you have ever skipped a fishing trip because loading the kayak felt like a workout, this boat was made for you.

Stability

The Recon uses a 35.4-inch-wide W-shaped hull, which is one of the more stable shapes in the modular kayak world. Most anglers up to about 230 pounds can stand and cast comfortably in calm to moderate water. It feels planted when you are seated and working a shoreline. In heavy boat wakes or strong current, sit down like you would in any 10-foot boat, but for lakes, ponds, and protected bays, the stability is confidence-inspiring.

Comfort and the Seat

It comes with a stadium-style seat that sits you in a comfortable, slightly elevated position. It is not a premium framed seat, but it is fine for half-day trips, and the elevated position helps with casting and visibility. The cockpit has a storage hatch within reach, so your tackle and phone stay close without cluttering the deck.

Storage and Rigging

For a 10-foot modular boat, the Recon is surprisingly well thought out. There is a built-in transducer recess that accepts standard puck transducers from Lowrance, Garmin, and Humminbird with no drilling, plus a deep battery box for running a fish finder from day one. For the battery, I recommend the WattCycle 12V 100Ah mini LiFePO4 battery with Bluetoothit runs most 12V trolling motors up to 55lb thrust plus a fish finder, and it’s compact and light. Two track rails take rod holders and accessories, and it ships with a 360-degree rod holder. There are four motor mounting options: rear transom, side-mount bar, the pedal-drive recess, or the nose. It even comes with a paddle, so you are covered if you want to paddle a skinny flat.

Fin Drive Performance

The fin drive is the stealth option. Two fins sweep side to side as you pedal, which is quiet and nearly weed-free, perfect for shallow flats and fishing tight to structure. It will not match a propeller drive for top speed or instant reverse, but in skinny water it is the better tool. Assembly takes under five minutes once you have done it a couple of times. The two halves interlock and clip together with no tools.

Honest Drawbacks

A two-piece hull will never feel quite as rigid as a one-piece rotomolded boat, though the seam system is solid. Ten feet is compact, which is great for transport but means less glide and deck space than a 12-footer. And while the included accessories are generous, serious anglers will still want to add their own rod holders, crate, and electronics mounts over time.
