Stability and Handling
Stability is the PA 14’s superpower. The 38 inch beam and massive hull volume create a platform you can stand on, walk around, and lean over the side of without drama. The EVA traction pads quiet your footsteps for shallow water fishing. It tracks well and the dual steering system with the retractable rudder gives you precise control. Pedaling is efficient, and the kick up fins handle stumps and shallow bars without damage. It is a big boat, so tight creeks are not its happy place.
Seat and Comfort
The Vantage ST seat is the best kayak seat I have sat in. It adjusts for height, recline, and leg support, and the Boa system lumbar support dials in your lower back. The breathable fabric keeps you cool. On a ten hour tournament day, this seat is the difference between finishing strong and limping to the truck. It removes easily for transport and cleaning.
Storage and Rigging
No kayak on the market is rigged like a PA 14. Six horizontal rod holders protect your rods inside the hull, plus molded in vertical rod storage. The large rectangular hatch has a pivoting tackle management system, and two Plano tackle boxes come with the boat. The extra large bow hatch with a removable liner doubles as a fish storage or livewell space. The Guardian retractable transducer shield protects your fish finder transducer, the H Rail system gives you acres of mounting space, and there are mesh stowage pockets, mid ship handles, and a sail mount. Pedal Drive Performance
The MirageDrive 180 is the drive that built Hobie’s reputation. Pedal forward for forward, pull the reverse handle and pedal backward for reverse. The kick up turbo fins deliver strong thrust and fold back on impact. It is quiet, efficient, and proven over hundreds of thousands of boats. Newer versions offer the MirageDrive 360 with full circle control, but the 180 remains a workhorse that just plain works.
Hobie’s fin drive also has a meaningful edge over the propeller-style pedal drives most other brands use, and it shows up in shallow water. A propeller typically sticks down a foot or slightly more below the hull and needs a foot of depth or more to spin freely — run skinny and you are either dragging it through the bottom or pulling the whole drive up. Hobie’s fins do not have that problem. They can lay almost flat against the underside of the hull and still flutter enough to keep you moving. You can pedal through water so shallow a propeller drive would be stuck in it.
Honest Drawbacks
Hobie was bought out by Bass Pro Shops in 2026. There has been a period here in 2026 where parts have been scarce for pedal drives during the transition period. This has prevented many from purchasing. However, some dealers are starting to get parts in stock. Before purchasing in 2026 verify that you can find parts like replacement mirage drive fins. In 2027 we imagine parts will be much more accessible. We have spoken with the company on this topic. We are very confident in the brand.
The weight is real. At 120.5 pounds for the fitted hull and 144.5 fully rigged, you need a trailer, a truck bed, or a good cart and a strong back. Solo car topping is not happening. The price is flagship level too, plus freight, which puts it out of reach for casual budgets. It is a big boat to store, taking up serious garage space. And in skinny winding creeks, the length and width work against you.
