What’s in this video

When I kayak at night I want a light, but the bugs are a major pest, and I’d been hearing about mosquitoes carrying Zika. So I built a light pole that doubles as a camera pole during the day. I found a rechargeable bug zapper light that is IPX6 waterproof and built the pole from 1/2″ PVC, a threaded insert, GoPro mounts and clear epoxy.

I can swap the light for a camera, or pull it off to use by my tent or hammock when camping on islands. On the kayak I noticeably have fewer bugs flying around my head. I also share some big news, including a baby registry and a trip to Home Depot.

Key moments

Quick takeaways

  • Use a rechargeable, IPX6 waterproof bug zapper light
  • Build the pole from 1/2" PVC with a 1/4"-20 threaded insert so a light or a GoPro can mount
  • The light comes off for use at your tent or hammock
  • Tools: drill with 5/16" and 3/16" bits, and a hammer
