What’s in this video

Safety lights for kayaks can be expensive, but you can build your own quality light with very few supplies. I built multiple light poles from $14.62 in supplies, and each setup cost $5 or less (prices at the time of the video).

The basic parts are 1/2″ PVC pipe cut to size, a flashlight or solar light, threaded 1/2″ PVC adapters depending on the design, a PVC plug, and a toilet bolt and nut for track mounting. A Bondo spray coat is optional, but it protects against harsh saltwater and gives it a professional look.

Quick takeaways

  • Each light pole cost $5 or less in supplies at the time of the video.
  • Toilet bolts work for track mounting, and the 1/4" kits are the best deal.
  • An optional Bondo spray coat helps protect against saltwater.
