DIY Trip Alarms for Off-Grid Kayak and Campsite Security
I show the off-grid trip alarms I rig to my kayaks and campsite so I get a loud warning if a thief starts messing with my gear.
What’s in this video
I keep my kayaks in my backyard on a rack, and I wanted some extra peace of mind. These trip alarms are cheap, reliable and don’t rely on batteries, so they’re a true off-grid solution. If one trips, I know for certain someone is trying to take a kayak.
I cover kayak theft prevention, how I install a perimeter alarm around the boats, and how I maintain and use the alarms. I didn’t fire one on video because it’s so loud and I didn’t want to bother my neighbors. When I tested it after I got it, it was as loud or louder than my 9mm handgun. They work for campsites at night too.
Key moments
Quick takeaways
- The trip alarms need no batteries, so they work fully off-grid.
- Rig them to the kayaks on your rack so any tampering sets them off.
- They're very loud, so think about your neighbors before testing one at home.
- The same setup can guard a campsite at night.
