Harbor Freight Folding Trailer Converted to a Kayak Trailer
I walk through how I turned a Harbor Freight folding trailer into a kayak trailer for my Hobie Tandem Island and bigger fishing kayaks.
What’s in this video
In part 1 I go over the Harbor Freight folding trailer I converted into a kayak trailer. I use it with my Hobie Tandem Island and my larger fishing kayaks. I made a removable extended trailer tongue that’s adjustable, switched the lights to submersible LEDs, added PVC bunks so the kayak slides on and off, and painted it to match my Hobie Tandem Island.
I also talk about mods I hadn’t done yet: a protective coating to better resist saltwater corrosion, and an easy add-on for carrying multiple kayaks and gear. Part 2 covers the telescoping bunks.
Key moments
Quick takeaways
- A removable, adjustable extended tongue gives the folding trailer the length a big kayak needs.
- Swap the stock lights for submersible LED trailer lights if you're backing into the water.
- PVC bunks let the kayak slide on and off the trailer.
