What’s in this video

I test the new Hobie Pro Angler 360 series, offered as the PA12 and PA14. The big deal is the MirageDrive 360. You steer with the rudder and also by spinning the pedal drive a full 360 degrees with a second hand control. No more pull cords to go reverse: turn the control so the arrow faces back and pedal backward, or sideways, or at an angle.

I walk through the drive features and the kayak’s controls, then put it on the water for handling demos and a real-world steering test. At the time of filming the PA12 360 listed at $4,649 and the PA14 360 at $4,799 MSRP, before tax and shipping. Nothing else on the market was like it.

Quick takeaways

  • A second hand control rotates the drive 360 degrees, so you can pedal in reverse or sideways without pull cords.
  • You can steer with both the rudder and the rotating drive.
  • The 360 drive does not fit older Hobies: it needs the new Click and Go 360 hull and drive well.
  • MSRP at the time of filming: $4,649 for the PA12 360 and $4,799 for the PA14 360, excluding tax and shipping.
