My buddy Roy at one of my dealers got in a SUPCAT 14, a new type of paddle board I saw on Instagram. It looked crazy fast, so I loaded it in my trusty but rusty Honda Ridgeline and called my friend Brandon from Water Powered to help me test it.

We used my Scout 430 inflatable as the camera boat. I’ve been running the 2.5 horse Yamaha on it instead of my 6 horse because it’s so much lighter, roughly 30 pounds, and it starts with a short pull. With promo code kayakdiy you could get $150 off the Scout at the time of the video. We inflated everything with an Outdoor Master pump.

On the SUPCAT 14, the speed with very little paddling effort was impressive. It also has a lot of stability for a board that long and narrow. Brandon stood on the back and it turned on a dime. Later we put the Bixpy motor on our paddle boards. It fits right in the fin slot. The brains are in the floating, waterproof battery pack, which has a tether kill in case you fall off. A wireless wrist remote cycles through 12 forward speeds and 3 reverse. The boards were fast, and we didn’t even use one bar of battery.

We both agree the SUPCAT 14 is not the board for multi-day camping trips because it lacks cargo area. For a day trip, paddling long distance and exploring, it’s great.

Quick takeaways

  • The SUPCAT 14 is fast and stable, but it has little cargo area, so it suits day trips over camping trips.
  • Standing on the tail lets the SUPCAT 14 turn on a dime.
  • The Bixpy motor slides into a standard paddle board fin slot, with a floating battery, tether kill and wrist remote.
  • A 2.5 hp Yamaha at roughly 30 pounds is a light, easy starting option for a small inflatable boat.
