I spent three days on a prototype VoyaX Mossa 128 testing its electric pedal assist drive, GPS anchoring and navigation, speed and stability.

What’s in this video

We’re at Estero River Outfitters with the VoyaX Mossa 128, a prototype sample. The drive is what got all the attention. It has a big screen with a built-in fish finder, electric pedal assist, manual pedaling and a GPS motor. The shaft rotates 360 degrees. Spot Hold anchors you at the push of a button, Spot Cruise takes you to a saved spot, and Course Hold keeps your heading.

The drive drops in a lot like an Old Town pedal drive, with toggles to lock it. Match the arrows on the two plugs and tighten them down. The battery bay fits two batteries, so I carried a spare to swap. There are three kill switches: a button on the drive, the drive has to be locked down in the water, and a magnetic tether you clip to yourself.

In manual mode alone I could pedal sideways and spin it tight like a ballerina. I’m about 205 to 210 lb and I stood up easily. Pedal assist kicks in instantly. In mode two I was doing 4.2 to 4.3 mph barely pedaling, and mode four got me to about 6.1 mph. The screen estimates range, and in assist mode one it showed something like 26 to 30 miles. Full electric has 10 speeds and the top speed I hit in any mode was 6.2 mph. At high speed the steering slows down so it won’t throw you out.

Then the GPS. Spot Hold held me in place for a long time. I picked a saved spot about 800 ft away, hit OK, picked a cruise speed and it took me there with no input from me. Pricing was still TBD from VoyaX when I filmed this.

Quick takeaways

  • Tap the up button to step through assist levels. Holding it jumps straight to the top speed.
  • Top speed I got in any mode was 6.2 mph, and pedal assist mode four hit about 6.1 mph.
  • Manual mode still turns and maneuvers well, so a dead battery won't ruin your day.
  • The drive won't run unless it's locked down in the water, plus there's a drive button and a tether kill switch.
