What’s in this video

I used my Viking kayak to test this, but you don’t need a Viking to run a Bixpy. The idea is simple: take a rudder, overlay the template, reshape it so the four bolts line up, and the Bixpy motor mounts right to it. Bixpy works with your existing rudder, or you can get their universal rudder that’s ready to go.

I go through it in order: cutting the rudder, installing the motor mount, putting on the up-haul bracket and bungee, adding the up-haul hardware, routing the lines and testing them. Then I attach the motor, set up the battery and test it all. It’s very easy, and a lot of kayaks can take a rudder without much work.

Quick takeaways

  • Many kayaks can take a universal rudder, and the Bixpy template lets you reshape it for the four mounting bolts.
  • Route and test your up-haul lines before you attach the motor.
  • If you don't want to modify a rudder, Bixpy sells a universal rudder already set up for the motor.
