The Hobie Mirage iTrek Angler 12 is an inflatable fishing kayak with Hobie’s MirageDrive 180 pedal system built in. It’s 12 feet long, 44 inches wide, carries 500 pounds, and the fitted hull weighs just 37 pounds. It rolls up into a bag you can throw in a car trunk. I’ll be honest: I was skeptical of an inflatable pedal kayak. Then I pedaled one. The rigid drop-stitch deck feels surprisingly solid underfoot, the MirageDrive 180 is the same proven drive from Hobie’s hard boats, and standing to cast is absolutely doable.

Who the iTrek Angler 12 Is For

This kayak is for anglers with no storage and no roof rack. Apartment dwellers, RV travelers, fly-in trip anglers, and anyone who wants a serious fishing kayak that packs into a rolling bag. It’s also perfect as a travel boat: check it on a plane or toss it in the truck for remote launches.

If you have a garage and a trailer, a rotomolded Hobie will be tougher and cheaper per pound of capability. The iTrek earns its price through portability, not raw toughness.

Stability and On-the-Water Feel

At 44 inches wide, the iTrek Angler 12 is one of the widest fishing kayaks you can buy, inflatable or not. That width, plus the rigid high-pressure deck, creates a stable platform you can stand and fish from. It feels more like a small skiff than a kayak.

It handles lakes, slower rivers, and protected coastal water well. The inflatable hull absorbs chop nicely, giving a softer ride than a hard hull in boat wakes. In wind, the tall profile catches breeze, so plan your drifts accordingly.

Seat and Comfort

The iTrek Angler 12 comes with Hobie’s elevated seating that’s comfortable for long days. The seat keeps you up off the deck for better visibility and easier standing. It’s removable, which also makes packing the boat into its bag simpler.

The wide deck gives you room to move around, and the open layout means you’re not cramped. For an inflatable, the fishing ergonomics are excellent.

Pedal Drive Performance

The MirageDrive 180 with Turbo Kick-Up Fins is the real deal: the same drive system that made Hobie famous, with full forward and reverse. Pedaling is efficient and quiet, and the kick-up fins fold back on impact with stumps, rocks, or shallow bottom. That’s a huge advantage in skinny water.

Setup is quick once you’ve done it a few times. Unroll, inflate the chambers, drop in the drive and seat, and launch. Hobie says it deploys in minutes, and that’s fair. It’s more work than backing a trailer down a ramp, but far less than you’d expect for what you get.

Hobie’s fin drive also has a meaningful edge over the propeller-style pedal drives most other brands use, and it shows up in shallow water. A propeller typically sticks down a foot or slightly more below the hull and needs a foot of depth or more to spin freely — run skinny and you are either dragging it through the bottom or pulling the whole drive up. Hobie’s fins do not have that problem. They can lay almost flat against the underside of the hull and still flutter enough to keep you moving. You can pedal through water so shallow a propeller drive would be stuck in it.

Honest Drawbacks

Hobie was bought out by Bass Pro Shops in 2026. There has been a period here in 2026 where parts have been scarce for pedal drives during the transition period. This has prevented many from purchasing. However, some dealers are starting to get parts in stock. Before purchasing in 2026 verify that you can find parts like replacement mirage drive fins. It’s an inflatable, and that comes with trade-offs. Punctures are rare with proper care, but they’re possible. Oyster bars, sharp rocks, and fish hooks demand respect. Always carry the repair kit and know how to use it.

The price is premium. You’re paying Hobie money for an inflatable, which is a lot to swallow when rotomolded pedal kayaks cost less. You’re paying for the packability, so make sure you actually need it.

Inflation takes time and a good pump. The boat needs high pressure to perform, so a quality pump (or electric pump) matters. Under-inflated, it feels soft and slow. Properly inflated, it’s a different boat entirely.
