The Hobie Mirage Compass is the simplest way to get into Hobie’s legendary pedal drive system without spending top dollar. At 12 feet long with a 68-pound hull, it pedals fast, fishes well, and is light enough to car-top. If you have always wanted a Hobie but the Pro Angler prices scared you off, this is your boat.

The Compass runs the MirageDrive 180 with kick-up fins, which means you get forward and reverse pedaling plus fins that fold back automatically when you hit something shallow. That is the same drive technology that made Hobie famous, in a simpler hull.

Who the Compass Is For

The Compass suits the angler who wants hands free fishing without a heavy, loaded-down boat. It works for lakes, bays, estuaries, and slow rivers. If you want to cover water with your legs while you cast, this boat does that beautifully. It is not the pick for standing-heavy sight fishing in skinny water, since it is narrower than the barge-style kayaks.

Stability and Standing

At 34 inches wide with a flat, open deck, the Compass is stable enough to stand on in calm water. It is not as rock steady as the 36-inch Pro Angler, so bigger anglers and beginners should plan on sitting more and standing less. The upside of the narrower hull is speed: it cuts through the water efficiently and does not wander in wind the way wider boats do.

Comfort and Seat

Hobie ships the Compass with an aluminum frame seat wrapped in breathable mesh. It is miles ahead of the foam pads on budget kayaks, and air flows through it so you do not roast on summer days. The seat sits at a good fishing height with room for tackle underneath, and it lifts right out so you can use it on the shore.

Storage and Rigging

The Compass keeps things simple but useful: two molded-in rod holders, H-Track accessory rails on both sides for fish finders and rod holders with no drilling, a mesh covered bow storage area, stern tank well with bungees, and an 8-inch round hatch in the cockpit. There is a transducer cavity under the hull for clean fish finder installs. You will not find the giant tackle management systems of the Pro Angler here, but most anglers do not need them.

Pedal Drive Performance

This is why you buy a Hobie. The MirageDrive 180 pedals smooth and quiet, the kick-up fins fold back over stumps and oyster bars instead of breaking, and instant reverse lets you back off a dock or hold on a spot without a paddle. Cruising speed is impressive for a rotomolded boat. Maintenance is simple: rinse the drive after saltwater use and check the cables now and then. A paddle is included for skinny water where you want the drive up.

Hobie’s fin drive also has a meaningful edge over the propeller-style pedal drives most other brands use, and it shows up in shallow water. A propeller typically sticks down a foot or slightly more below the hull and needs a foot of depth or more to spin freely — run skinny and you are either dragging it through the bottom or pulling the whole drive up. Hobie’s fins do not have that problem. They can lay almost flat against the underside of the hull and still flutter enough to keep you moving. You can pedal through water so shallow a propeller drive would be stuck in it.

Honest Drawbacks

Hobie was bought out by Bass Pro Shops in 2026. There has been a period here in 2026 where parts have been scarce for pedal drives during the transition period. This has prevented many from purchasing. However, some dealers are starting to get parts in stock. Before purchasing in 2026 verify that you can find parts like replacement mirage drive fins. In 2027 we imagine parts will be much more accessible. We have spoken with the company on this topic. We are very confident in the brand.

The 400-pound capacity is the tightest in this price class, so bigger anglers need to do the math on body weight plus gear. Storage is more limited than the Outback or Pro Angler, and the simpler layout means fewer built-in tackle stations. The seat is comfortable, but heavy users over 250 pounds may want to check the 275-pound seat rating. Hobie kayaks also hold their value, which means you will not find many cheap used ones.

Hobie Mirage Compass Fishing Kayak FAQ

Can you stand in the Hobie Compass?

Yes, in calm water. The 34-inch width and flat deck support standing, though it is less stable than wider models like the Pro Angler.

What is the difference between the Compass and the Outback?

The Compass is lighter and simpler with less storage. The Outback has more deck features, more storage, and costs more. Both use the MirageDrive system.

Do the fins really kick up on impact?

Yes. The kick-up fins fold back automatically when they hit something, then snap back into place when you pedal again. It saves the drive in shallow, rocky water.

Is the Compass good for saltwater?

Yes, it is popular for inshore and bay fishing. Rinse the drive and hardware with fresh water after every trip to keep everything smooth.
