Tandem kayaks are usually a compromise. One person paddles hard, the other gets bored, and someone ends up doing all the work.
Tandem kayaks are usually a compromise. One person paddles hard, the other gets bored, and someone ends up doing all the work. The Hobie Mirage Compass Duo fixes that with two pedal drives, so both of you contribute and both of you keep your hands free for fishing.

if a pedal tandem sounds like your kind of boat.
At 13 feet 6 inches with dual MirageDrives, the Compass Duo is one of the most fun ways to share the water.
Who This Kayak Is For
This is for couples, fishing buddies, and parents who want to bring a kid along. If you’ve ever tried paddling a tandem where one person quits paddling halfway across the lake, you know why two pedal drives matter.
It also works as a big solo boat. Take one drive out and you’ve got a roomy single with tons of gear space. Solo anglers who want maximum room love this setup.
Dual MirageDrives: How They Work
The Compass Duo comes with two drives: one MirageDrive 180 with Kick-Up Fins and one MirageDrive GT with Kick-Up Fins. The 180 gives you instant forward and reverse by pulling a cable. The GT is forward only but just as efficient.
Hobie’s pedal system uses fins instead of a propeller, so it’s efficient and quiet. The Kick-Up Fins retract on impact, which means shallow water, stumps, and sandbars don’t destroy your drive. That’s a big deal if you fish skinny water.

Both seats have their own steering controls, so either paddler can steer the kick-up rudder. No more shouting directions at each other.
Hobie’s fin drive also has a meaningful edge over the propeller-style pedal drives most other brands use, and it shows up in shallow water. A propeller typically sticks down a foot or slightly more below the hull and needs a foot of depth or more to spin freely — run skinny and you are either dragging it through the bottom or pulling the whole drive up. Hobie’s fins do not have that problem. They can lay almost flat against the underside of the hull and still flutter enough to keep you moving. You can pedal through water so shallow a propeller drive would be stuck in it.
Stability and Handling
The hull is 35 inches wide and 13 feet 6 inches long. It’s stable enough for two adults to fish comfortably, and the sleek hull design keeps drag low so it moves well even with two people pedaling at a relaxed pace.
Solo, it feels like a big, stable single. The hull tracks well and the rudder makes steering easy. In wind, the tandem length helps it hold a line better than a short single.
Getting two people moving in sync takes a few minutes to figure out, but once you find a rhythm, it cruises.
Seats and Comfort
Two ergonomic seats with breathable mesh keep both paddlers comfortable. The seats adjust for different leg lengths, which matters when your fishing buddy is a foot taller than you.
The cockpit layout gives both seats good legroom and easy access to the pedal drives. There’s enough space that you don’t feel cramped, even on long days.

Storage and Rigging
Storage for two is generous. Twist-and-seal hatches keep gear dry, and the rear cargo area with bungee handles crates and coolers. There’s abundant above and below deck storage for a full day of fishing for two.
Four integrated H-Tracks give both anglers mounting spots for rod holders, fish finders, and cameras. Four molded-in rod holders come standard. The Lowrance-ready transducer scupper makes fish finder installation clean and simple.
A sail and bimini mount is built in if you want to add a sail kit or sun shade later. Cup holders, paddle storage, and dual steering round out the package.
Honest Drawbacks
Hobie was bought out by Bass Pro Shops in 2026. There has been a period here in 2026 where parts have been scarce for pedal drives during the transition period. This has prevented many from purchasing. However, some dealers are starting to get parts in stock. Before purchasing in 2026 verify that you can find parts like replacement mirage drive fins. In 2027 we imagine parts will be much more accessible. We have spoken with the company on this topic. We are very confident in the brand.
Weight is the trade-off. At 92 pounds for the hull and 127 pounds fully rigged, this is a heavy boat. You’ll want a trailer or two strong people for loading. It’s not a grab-and-go kayak.
Capacity is 475 pounds total, which is fine for two average adults and gear but worth checking if you’re both on the bigger side. And like all tandems, it’s only as fun as your partner. Solo, it’s a lot of boat to handle alone.
