I show how I built my GoPro monopod pole mount for kayaking, with either a Scotty or RAM base, and the camera angle I like best.

What’s in this video

This camera mount has served me well for over 3 1/2 years. It takes a lot of abuse and gets some really nice angles for my kayaking videos. The pole is a monopod (I used the TG-MP6710, and the Dolica WT-1003 looks the same and may be cheaper).

There are two options for the base. One is a Scotty gear head setup, which needs two gear heads plus a Scotty knob. The other is a 1″ RAM wedge mount, which fits great in the end of the monopod, with a 1″ RAM ball socket. Up top, a RAM GoPro 1″ ball adapter or a RAM 1″ ball with a 1/4-20 threaded stud connects the camera. My favorite view is a Scotty mount on the rear of the kayak, shooting high over the kayaker’s back.

Quick takeaways

  • Base options: two Scotty gear heads and a knob, or a 1" RAM wedge mount in the end of the monopod.
  • A RAM 1" ball adapter connects the GoPro to the top of the pole.
  • Mount it on the rear of the kayak for a high angle view over the kayaker's back.
