What’s in this video

Shout out to Roy over in Miami for making this one happen. He shows the two best ways to put a Bixpy jet motor on a Hobie Compass Duo, and neither one needs holes drilled. Hobie is just the demo here. A lot of kayaks have PowerPole stern mounts or fin drive wells, so the same adapters work on other brands too.

Option one is the PowerPole WillFit adapter. The Compass does not come with the PowerPole plate from the factory, so you buy that optional plate from Hobie. Roy put quarter-20 bolts up from the bottom, dropped the bracket on and tightened the supplied knobs. It does not move. The shaft kicks up if you bump something in shallow water, and a clip holds it down in reverse. On a single kayak you can keep pedaling to help the motor and save battery. Downsides: steering is a little harder back there, and it’s harder to reach the grill if weeds clog it.

Option two is the fin adapter that drops into the Mirage drive well, with a narrow shroud so it slides through. Steering is very responsive, and it’s easy to pop out and clean weeds. But it sticks down a good amount below the hull, so watch out for stumps or oyster bars. Roy also covers battery spots: under the cargo net up front gets splashed, and the rear seat on the Duo has no scupper, so water can puddle there. We run both setups through the speeds on the water.

Quick takeaways

  • The PowerPole mount needs Hobie's optional PowerPole plate. Quarter-20 bolts from a hardware store hold the bracket.
  • The Mirage drive well adapter uses a narrow shroud, steers more responsively and is easier to pull out to clear weeds.
  • The drive well mount sits well below the hull, so it is not the best pick for shallow water with stumps or oyster bars.
  • Keep the battery out of spots that puddle. The Compass Duo rear seat has no scupper, so water can collect there.
