FeelFree Kayaks: Every Model Compared

Lure, Dorado, Moken, SuperFish and the AirShip, plus the 3 Waters Big Fish boats from the same family. How the Overdrive and pedal systems fit together.

What I have seen from FeelFree

I have followed FeelFree’s Overdrive system since the prototype. At ICAST 2016 I saw it on a Lure 11.5: a 20:1 gear ratio and an adjustable pitch prop, with straight cut gears that were a bit noisy, which FeelFree said it would fix with spiral cut gears before release. In 2017 and again on the water at ICAST 2018 I looked at the Dorado, where the pedals and the Overdrive motor are integrated and take up very little room. It is a clean design. I also covered the Lure II tandem with its optional pedal and motor drives, and in 2022 the modular AirShip, which is like a LEGO kayak you can reconfigure.

Some background: FeelFree US is based in Old Fort, North Carolina, and its kayaks are made in FeelFree’s own factory in Thailand. The same company makes 3 Waters, Jonny Boats and Seastream. At ICAST 2021 I walked the shared booth for all four brands.

How to read this page: my FeelFree coverage is mostly show floor and ICAST on-water demos, listed in the videos below. Table specs come from FeelFree’s published numbers in my reviews. Prices I mention from videos were the prices at the time.

Which FeelFree is right for you?

  • Pedal fishing on a budget: the Moken 10 PDL or Moken 12.5 PDL with the Rapid pedal drive.
  • Pedal now, motor later: a Lure Overdrive V2. The Overdrive pedal drive is Motordrive ready.
  • Pedal and motor built in: the Dorado 125 Overdrive.
  • Two people: the Lure II Tandem Overdrive V2.
  • Planning on a motor instead of pedals: the motor-ready SuperFish 108.
  • Storage space is tight: the AirShip inflatable pedal kayak, keeping in mind its 250 lb capacity.
  • Stand-up fishing value: the 3 Waters Big Fish 105 or 120.

Pedal drives, Motordrive and steering

The Overdrive pedal system, the Motordrive that plugs into it, the Rapid and Pro Fish drives, plus Beaver Tail rudders and the 8 Ball steering system.

3 Waters Big Fish (FeelFree family)

3 Waters builds the Big Fish stand-up fishing kayaks. When I saw the Big Fish 105 and 120 at ICAST 2018, the flat padded deck was built for walking around and fishing standing up, the seat flips out of the way for more standing room, and a center pod makes adding a fish finder easy. The pedal versions use the ProFish drive, which drops in and locks with one lever.

FeelFree FAQ

What is the FeelFree Overdrive?

It is FeelFree's pedal drive system with forward and reverse. The Motordrive plugs into it, so you can pedal, run the motor, or both. The prototype I saw in 2016 had a 20:1 gear ratio and an adjustable pitch prop.

Which FeelFree kayak has a pedal and motor?

The Dorado 125 Overdrive is built around both, and the Lure Overdrive V2 boats are Motordrive ready.

Are FeelFree and 3 Waters the same company?

Yes. FeelFree US makes FeelFree, 3 Waters, Jonny Boats and Seastream kayaks.

Where are FeelFree kayaks made?

FeelFree kayaks are made in FeelFree's own factory in Thailand. FeelFree US is based in Old Fort, North Carolina.
