YakGadget Kayak Accessories: The Complete Guide

QuickStop anchors, LowPro crates, FlexRod stagers, phone and sonar mounts and rigging, from a company started by a kayak angler.

Who is YakGadget?

At ICAST 2023 I met John Thomas (JT), the owner of YakGadget. He was an avid kayak angler and a graphic designer for 30 years, and he started out making motor mounts. That grew into anchor systems, storage, track gear and under seat storage, around 120 products for kayaks at every price level.

He showed it all on a NuCanoe Unlimited. The combo stern plate takes a Power-Pole style mount, a transom motor mount or the QuickStop stake out anchor, and a loop on the back lets you run a conventional anchor too, so you get shallow and deep water anchoring in one setup. The LowPro Crate XD has twisting rod tubes and a dry bag cover with a waterproof zipper, and everything leans back at an angle for an easy reach. JT designed that after back surgery, and to stay safe on narrow kayaks where reaching back could roll you. Under the seat, the Quad Flex and Duo Flex slide your gear out when you pull a strap.

How to read this page: my YakGadget coverage is the ICAST 2023 walkthrough below. Many YakGadget parts are made for specific kayaks (Hobie, NuCanoe, Crescent Shoalie, Vibe), so check the fit on each product page.

Which YakGadget gear do you need?

  • Anchoring in shallow and deep water: a QuickStop system. There are versions for Hobie Pro Angler and NuCanoe.
  • Tank well storage that is easy to reach: the LowPro Crate or Crate XD.
  • Storage under the seat: the Duo Flex for lower seats like the Hobie Outback, or the Quad Flex for NuCanoe, Pro Angler and Lynx seats.
  • Rods out of the way: FlexRod stagers.
  • Phone, camera or live sonar: CellGrip, CameraGrip and the QuickScope sonar mount.

YakGadget FAQ

What is the YakGadget QuickStop?

A stake out anchor system that mounts at the stern with smart cleats and line guides. On the setup I saw, a loop on the back also let you run a conventional anchor, so it covers shallow and deep water.

Who owns YakGadget?

YakGadget was started by John Thomas (JT), an avid kayak angler and longtime graphic designer who began by making motor mounts.

Which YakGadget under seat storage fits my kayak?

From the ICAST demo: the Duo Flex fits lower seats like the Hobie Outback, and the Quad Flex fits NuCanoe, Pro Angler and Lynx seats.
