Malone Kayak Trailers, Racks and Carts: The Complete Guide

MicroSport and MegaSport trailers, roof carriers, truck racks, carts and storage. How Malone's modular system fits together, from someone who built a MicroSport off-road trailer.

Why I went with a Malone trailer

Getting a kayak to the water is half the battle, and for my saltwater boats I wanted a trailer. I built a Malone MicroSport LowBed off-road trailer, and it shipped right to my door, which is a big deal if you do not live near a dealer. The cool part about Malone is that you can build it out like Legos: I run bunks for now, and later I can switch to saddles or add a second tier to carry more kayaks.

Here is what I found after building it. It is galvanized with a coating on top, so it has double corrosion protection for saltwater launches. The wide off-road wheels keep it from sinking into sand or the soggy grass where I store it, the LED lights are rated for submersion so I can back it into the water, and it is light enough that I can pick it up by the handle and wheel it around the lawn. The one confusing part of the build was which frame bolts get washers, so watch the instructional videos before you start. I torqued the wheels to 80 ft-lbs.

Some background: Malone Auto Racks operates from the coast of Maine and has been making racks and trailers for over 25 years.

How to read this page: I have built and used the MicroSport LowBed off-road trailer myself. The rest of the Malone line is grouped by what it does so you can find the right piece. For truck bed extenders specifically, my own pick is a Boonedox T-Bone, which I explain in my short bed truck video.

Which Malone setup is right for you?

  • Saltwater, sand or soggy launches: a MicroSport Off-Road trailer. This is what I run.
  • Heavy pedal kayaks or several boats: a MegaSport trailer or a trailer with a second tier.
  • Lightweight boats on a budget trailer: an EcoLight trailer package.
  • Car roof: J-style or saddle carriers on a roof rack, with a Telos XL or DownLoader load assist if lifting is the hard part.
  • Pickup truck: an Axis bed extender or a CrossBed or TradeSport rack.
  • Moving the kayak to the water: a Traverse, Forge or WideTrak cart.
  • Garage or wall storage: the FS racks, wall cradles or the Elevate stand.

Malone FAQ

Is the Malone MicroSport trailer good for saltwater?

In my experience, yes. Mine is galvanized with a coating on top, the LED lights are rated for submersion, and the off-road version's wide wheels handle sand and wet grass.

Can you add more kayaks to a Malone trailer later?

Yes. Malone trailers are modular. I started with bunks, and you can switch to saddles or add a second tier to carry more boats.

Is a Malone trailer hard to assemble?

It took some care. You assemble it upside down, and the one part that confused me was which frame bolts get washers, so watch the instructional videos first.
